We study the relationship between the house, doors, pool, landscape and outdoor circulation, then determine where shade will be most useful during the hours the space is actually occupied. That analysis affects the footprint, height, orientation and amount of coverage.
The design also has to support the way the space will live after construction. Dining beneath a pergola requires different clearances and lighting than a lounge area.
